Is Blow Molding the Right Plastic Solution for You?

joining together hollow plastic parts. Blow molding offers the advantages of low costs for tooling and fast production rates. We’ve found blow molding offers excellent ability to mold a variety of parts, including some complex designs, and can incorporate handles into designs. This type of molding only makes hollow parts, and, due to multilayer-material construction, they cannot readily be recycled.

Blow molding begins by melting down plastic and forming it into a parison or a preform in the case of injection and injection stretch blow molding (ISB). The parison is a tube-like piece of plastic with a hole in one end for compressed air to enter. The parison is inserted into a mold and air is blown into it, and the pressure pushes the plastic out to the mold. Once the plastic has hardened the mold is opened and the part removed. Water channels are carved into the mold to assist in cooling.

Blow-molded plastics include polyethylene products, such as bottles for chemicals, automotive ducting, and hollow industrial parts.
